Generating References

Generating references is a tedious task. The two following procedures make life easier.

A. Intelligent Bookmarks

As you probably use PubMed for your literature searches, one single mouse click will provide you with a completely formatted reference.

Requirements:

  • You need to use Firefox or the Internet-Explorer (IE).
  • Javascript has to be activated.

    Procedure:

    1. Add a new bookmark to Firefox or IE, for example "PubMed".
    2. Highlight the new bookmark, click the right mouse button, and select "Properties".
    3. The "Properties" window opens. Copy the following text into the field "URL" ("Location" in Firefox):

      javascript:(function(){var url = location.href;var pmid = url.match(/TermToSearch\=(\d+)/);if( pmid ) w=open('http://www.freemedicalinformation.com/uid_bm.php?amedeo=0&getuid=Create+References&pmidlist=' + pmid[1],'add','width=800,height=700,scrollbars,resizable');})();

    4. Now open a single article in PubMed (see example).
    5. Click on your new "PubMed" bookmark.
    6. In a separate window, the reference appears.
    7. Copy and paste it.
    8. For each subsequent reference, repeat steps 4 to 7.

    B. Amedeo Reference Generator

We have created another small piece of software to generate multiple references. You just need to submit the "PMID numbers" of the articles.

First, collect the PMID numbers of your articles from the PubMed website. To obtain multiple PMID numbers, perform one or more searches and group the articles you need.

Then select "UI List" from the display menu and "Text" from the 'Send to' Menu.

A list of PMID numbers will appear on your screen, for example

    17065000
    16374211
    16504964
Copy these numbers into the Reference Generator and click "Create References".

We welcome your comments and suggestions.
